Improved early warning of compact binary mergers using higher modes of gravitational radiation: a population study

چکیده

A gravitational-wave (GW) early-warning of a compact-binary coalescence event, with sufficiently tight localisation skymap, would allow telescopes to point in the direction potential electromagnetic counterpart before its onset. This will enable astronomers extract valuable information complex astrophysical phenomena triggered around time merger. Use higher-modes gravitational radiation, addition dominant mode typically used templated real-time searches, was recently shown produce significant improvements times and skyarea localisations for range asymmetric-mass binaries. In this work, we perform large-scale study assess benefits method population compact binary merger observations. particular, inject 100,000 such signals Gaussian noise, component masses $m_1 \in \left[1, 60 \right] M_{\odot}$ $m_2 \left [1, 3 M_{\odot}$. We consider three scenarios involving ground-based detectors: fifth (O5) observing run Advanced LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA network, projected Voyager upgrade, as well proposed third generation (3G) network. find that fixed early warning $20-60$ seconds, inclusion higher modes can provide factor $\gtrsim 2$ up $\sim 60\%$ ($70 \%$) neutron star-black hole systems O5 (Voyager) scenario. Considering only those which counterparts, be expected 5-35\%$ $(20-50\%)$ binaries (Voyager), although areas themselves depend on distances. For 3G scenario, fraction events have gains minute several minutes, assuming fiducial target 100 1000 sq. deg.

Mergers of Binary Compact Objects

We work out the effects of hypercritical accretion, which transfers mass from the secondary to the primary (first-born) neutron star (NS) in a binary, showing that the mass of the primary would end up ∼ > 0.6M⊙ greater than the secondary NS in contradiction with the very nearly equal masses of the two NS’s in binaries measured to date. We discuss that the primary NS evolves into a low-mass blac...

Radio Counterparts of Compact Binary Mergers Detectable in Gravitational Waves: a Simulation for an Optimized Survey

Mergers of binary neutron stars and black hole–neutron star binaries produce gravitational-wave(GW) emission and outflows with significant kinetic energies. These outflows result in radio emissions through synchrotron radiation. We explore the detectability of these synchrotron-generated radio signals by follow-up observations of GW merger events lacking a detection of electromagnetic counterp...

Relativistic SPH Calculations of Compact Binary Mergers

We review recent progress in understanding the hydrodynamics of compact binary mergers using relativistic smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) codes. Recent results are discussed for both double neutron stars and black hole – neutron star binaries. The gravitational wave signals from these mergers contain a lot of information about the masses and radii of the stars and the equation of state of...
